Vine Bridge is in the rarely visited “Iya” where there is the legend of the tragic tale of the Heike clan. It is made of the hardy kiwi wood (weighing approximately 6 tons) and is 45 meters long, 2 meters wide, and is set 14 meters above the river. In the olden days, the bridge was the only traffic facility in the region with deep mountains and valleys. It is replaced every three years. (Japan’s designated Important Folk-Cultural Property.)

An emerald green Iya River runs through the deep V-shaped valley, and the view of the bottom of the valley from above is enough to make you dizzy. The whole valley from the base to the peaks turns crimson in the autumn which can be seen from cars and buses.

There is a rock a sheer cliff along Iya River which was left over from the works carried out to build Iya Highway, and a Peeing Boy statue standing on top of it was made based on an anecdote about local children and travelers testing their courage.
