It is the head temple of the Shingonshu sect of Buddhism. Legend has it that Kukai had opened the temple after building seven monasteries according to an oracle he had received at Kompira Temple and enshrining a golden statue he had carved. Iya-no-Kazurabashi (Vine Bridge)History&Culture

Vine Bridge is in the rarely visited “Iya” where there is the legend of the tragic tale of the Heike clan. It is made of the hardy kiwi wood (weighing approximately 6 tons) and is 45 meters long, 2 meters wide, and is set 14 meters above the river. In the olden days, the bridge was the only traffic facility in the region with deep mountains and valleys. It is replaced every three years. (Japan’s designated Important Folk-Cultural Property.)
