Wakimachi Udatsu Townscape Slow Cycling Tour 【Mima City, Wakimachi】

Ride a stylish British-made folding bike, the “Brompton,” and enjoy a relaxing cycling tour around the historic “Udatsu Townscape” lined with traditional buildings from the mid-Edo period, as well as the scenic Yoshino River area.

This course takes you through the “Udatsu Townscape of Wakimachi,” where traditional architecture from the Edo period still remains, and then out along the tranquil riverside of the Yoshino River. The townscape itself retains its nostalgic charm, with renovated restaurants, cozy cafés, and indigo-dye shops—perfect for relaxed stops during the ride.

As you cycle through the town, you’ll spot the retro Odeon Theater across the Otani River—the charming venue featured in the film “The Man Who Caught the Rainbow” (Niji o Tsukamu Otoko, 1996). Thanks to the attention the movie brought to it, the theater was restored and later designated as a cultural landmark. The route then leads you along a quiet levee road with no cars, crossing over to Anabuki. Here, you can take a break on the riverside of the Anabuki River, known as Japan’s clearest stream. The course continues through Mainakashima, once a major indigo production area, before crossing a traditional low-water bridge back toward the townscape.
