Savour traditional dishes in a historical samurai residence [Iya, Tokushima]

Enjoy Iya's traditional dishes in Samurai House Old Kita Residence. In a time-honored building with a beautiful thatched roof, sit by an open hearth and enjoy marriage of local foods and rich culture.

In the largest samurai residence in Iya built about 250 years ago, enjoy the traditional dishes – amego fish (kind of trout) from nearby clear river, skewered indigenous potatoes, hard tofu (soy beancurd) and dekomawashi (jelly-like root vegetable cake with sweet bean paste) – all charcoal-grilled in open hearth. In addition, you’ll have Iya’s soba buckwheat noodles, seasonal mountain vegetable tempura, deep-fried venison and konnyaku and various kinds of fresh vegetables locally grown by traditional farming on steep hills. Everything is cooked simply to bring out the best of each ingredients.
After the lunch, relax at the samurai residence. In the forest nearby, you’ll be welcomed by a giant cedar tree with serene atmosphere. Designated as a Natural Monument of Tokushima Prefecture, the tree is said to be planted by Taira Kunimori, a fleeing samurai who lost in the battle of Yashima in 1185 and enshrined the clan’s treasure halberd. With its height at about 35 m (= 115 ft. ) and trunk of 11 m (=36 ft. ) around, the tree has an overwhelming vitality.
