Iya’s Traditional Feast: Hirarayaki & Tea Grinding Experience🍽️🍵
This dish never gets old! “Hirarayaki” is an Iya-style BBQ, where the locals traditionally paint a huge river stone with miso paste, using it to grill fish and veggies by the riverside. Now you can try it yourself, albeit with a quicker method--an iron plate. 😆
In this activity, you’ll slather the grill with rich miso and fry up some delicious “Stone Tofu”--the regional specialty! (This is a super firm, subtly sweet tofu that reminds me of cheese… there’s no other tofu quite like it, and I could eat it everyday ♥️)
Take turns tearing up the massive block of tofu, and mixing it into the miso before enjoying it with fresh ginger and green onions… an amazing combination. 😋 Gather a group and get ready to feast!!
As an additional experience, you can also try “tea grinding”, using a stone mortar to grind tea leaves and enjoy the freshest cup of tea you've ever had! This green tea, grown in the nearby mountains of Iya, is natural, delicious, and super refreshing. ✨
